Photography has become one of the most popular ways to decorate a home and I completely understand why.

A photograph can make a room feel more personal in a way that other artwork can't. 

But after spending years photographing coastal places and seeing how people style prints in their homes, I've noticed the same mistake over and over again.

People choose photographs because they fit the room, instead of choosing photographs that shape how the room feels.

It sounds like a small difference, but it completely changes the result.

When I'm creating new prints, I'm never thinking about matching someone's sofa or wall colour. I'm thinking about a feeling someone wants to bring into a room.

Authentic moments with locals, a surfboard on an old car, an empty wave breaking perfectly.

That's exactly what makes a photograph work so well in an interior.

A room doesn't become memorable because every colour matches perfectly. It’s because there's something that catches your eye every time you walk in and pulls the room together making it fitting with the person living there. 

That's why I always suggest choosing photography before thinking about the styling details. You should ask yourself how you want your home to feel and what fits your personality.

Once you know the answer, the right print becomes much easier to recognise.

Of course, practical things like size, framing and colour still matter. But they should support, not be the choice.
